Table of contents

New Zealand web design agencies we'd point someone at include What IF Web in Christchurch, Psychoactive Studios in Wellington, Studio Almond in Auckland, and Catch Design across Wellington and Auckland. They're all design-led studios rather than volume website shops, which is the distinction that matters most when you're choosing. We're first on this list, and yes, we wrote the list, so we'll own that. Below is an honest read on each of them.

Most "best agency" lists rank whoever paid for the spot or whoever happened to rank first on Google that week. This one is simply the studios we'd genuinely mention if a mate asked us over a coffee, and we'll keep adding to it as we come across others doing good work. The useful part isn't the order. It's understanding what separates a studio that designs your site from one that fills in a layout, because the price difference between those two things is smaller than you'd think and the outcome difference is not.

Who are the best web design agencies in New Zealand?

The New Zealand web design agencies worth shortlisting are What IF Web, Psychoactive Studios, Studio Almond and Catch Design. Each designs from scratch rather than working from templates, and each has a different centre of gravity: bespoke Webflow builds and web applications, design-led enterprise work, ecommerce, and large-scale corporate and government digital experiences.

Based Founded Best suited for
What IF Web Christchurch 2022 Bespoke Webflow builds, web applications and AI search visibility
Psychoactive Studios Wellington Webflow Enterprise Partner since 2022 Design-led work with international reach
Studio Almond Auckland In Webflow's ecosystem since 2016 Ecommerce brands wanting Shopify and Webflow together
Catch Design Wellington and Auckland 2005 Large corporate and government digital experiences

What are you actually paying for in web design?

You're paying for the thinking that happens before anything gets drawn, and that's the difference between a designed website and a decorated one. A template can be made to look tidy in an afternoon. What it can't do is work out what your buyers need to see, in what order, to get from curious to in touch, because that's a decision about your business rather than about layout.

The gap shows up in specifics. A designed site has a considered content structure, so the important things are easy to find and the page tells a story. It has a real hierarchy, so the eye lands where you want it to. It's built to convert rather than just to look nice, with a clear route from any page toward getting in touch. And it's built cleanly enough that your team can add to it later without the whole thing falling apart.

Cheap sites are usually cheap because that work didn't happen, not because the studio was efficient. If you compare two quotes and one is half the price, the honest question to ask is which parts of the process the cheaper one has removed. Sometimes that's fine, plenty of businesses genuinely need a simple site quickly. Just know which one you're buying.

An honest read on each New Zealand web design agency

What IF Web

What IF Web is a Webflow Premium Partner based on St Asaph Street in Christchurch, designing bespoke websites, brands and web applications for ambitious businesses locally and globally. Premium Partner status is vetted by Webflow, and only a handful of New Zealand studios hold it or higher.

Everything we design starts from scratch. No templates, no theme with your logo dropped in. Around ninety percent of what we ship runs on Webflow, and sites are structured so your own team can run them afterwards without a developer on speed dial. When a project needs more than a page builder can carry, we build web applications on a custom stack: back ends, portals, integrations and the parts sitting behind the marketing site. That range is unusual for a studio this size, and it means we don't have to talk you out of what you actually need.

The other thing that separates us right now is AI search. We're New Zealand's first OtterlyAI partner and we run a full AI search practice tracking whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews actually recommend a business. Very few design studios anywhere are doing that work properly, and it changes how we build: the site is structured to be found and cited, not just to look good.

We're a small senior team, so you deal directly with the people doing the work. No account managers, no handoff chain, no junior getting handed your project after the pitch. Have a look at our case studies or our marketing websites work. If you want the cheapest five-page site in town, we'll say so early rather than after the invoice.

Psychoactive Studios

Psychoactive Studios is a Wellington digital design agency and a Webflow Enterprise Partner, operating in that space since 2022. Enterprise is the top tier of Webflow's partner programme, and only two New Zealand studios hold it. The work is internationally recognised and firmly design-led, with projects across New Zealand and offshore.

They're a strong pick if what you want is ambitious, design-forward work with real craft behind it. They're set up for larger engagements, so match the brief to the scale. If your project is a straightforward marketing site, you'll likely get a better-matched engagement from a smaller studio.

Studio Almond

Studio Almond is a small Auckland studio co-founded by Alex and Monica, and they've been in the Webflow ecosystem a long time, describing themselves as New Zealand's first Webflow expert back in 2016. They deliberately stay small, with senior people doing the work rather than juniors, and fixed project fees for cost certainty.

Their current centre of gravity is ecommerce. They position primarily as Shopify Plus experts working with fashion, lifestyle, wellness and FMCG brands, with Webflow alongside it. If you're a retail brand who wants design and ecommerce from one studio, that combination is genuinely useful. If you're not selling online, you're not their core client.

Catch Design

Catch Design is a Wellington and Auckland agency founded in 2005, with a team of between eleven and fifty. They work on large-scale digital experiences for some of the country's best-known organisations, with a portfolio including 2degrees, Mercury, One NZ, Burger King, the New Zealand Olympic Committee, Consumer NZ, Fonterra and TSB. They were finalists at the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards in 2023, and they're an approved supplier on the government's Pae Hokohoko Marketplace. In September 2024 they were acquired by Bastion.

They're the pick when the project is genuinely enterprise: self-service portals, large-scale platforms, accessibility and compliance requirements, mobile apps alongside the website. That comes with agency scale and agency pricing, so for a small or mid-sized business it's likely more machinery than the job needs.

How do you choose a web design agency in New Zealand?

Shortlist on the kind of work an agency actually does, then judge on how they answer questions. The portfolio matters less than whether it contains projects at a similar scope to yours, because a studio that mostly builds enterprise portals will approach a fifteen-page marketing site very differently to one that builds those every week.

Three questions worth asking every studio you talk to. Who will actually do the work once the contract is signed, because in larger agencies the people who pitch aren't always the people who build. What happens after launch, specifically whether your team can update the site without calling them for every change. And can they show you the reasoning behind a design decision on a past project, not just the finished screens.

The last one is the most revealing. Any studio can show you something that looks good. The ones worth hiring can tell you why it's shaped that way and what it was trying to achieve. Our guide on how to choose a website designer goes deeper on this.

Does it matter where your web design agency is based?

Less than it used to, but not as little as agencies claim. Most New Zealand studios work remotely and take clients nationally, so being in the same city isn't a requirement for good work. What being local actually buys you is the option to sit in a room together at the start of a project, a studio with a reputation to protect in your own market, and someone in your timezone when something needs fixing.

Weight fit ahead of geography. If you're in Canterbury specifically, our Christchurch web design and Christchurch web development lists cover that market in more detail, and if you've already settled on the platform, we've also written up the best Webflow agencies in New Zealand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the best web design agency in New Zealand?

There's no single best agency, because it depends on the scale and type of your project. What IF Web is a Webflow Premium Partner in Christchurch designing bespoke sites, web applications and AI search visibility. Psychoactive Studios is a Wellington Webflow Enterprise Partner doing design-led work. Studio Almond suits ecommerce brands wanting Shopify and Webflow together. Catch Design handles large corporate and government digital experiences. Match the studio to what you're actually building.

What is the difference between a web design agency and a website builder?

A web design agency designs your site from scratch, working out content structure, hierarchy and conversion paths around your specific business before anything is built. A website builder or template gives you a pre-made layout to fill in. Templates are faster and cheaper and genuinely suit some businesses. The difference shows up in whether the site is shaped around how your buyers actually make decisions.

How much does a web design company cost in New Zealand?

A professional B2B website typically runs $8,000 to $20,000 with a reputable agency. Template-based builds start lower. Enterprise and custom builds go higher. For a full breakdown, see our website pricing guide.

What makes What IF Web different from other Christchurch web agencies?

We're a small team, which means you deal directly with the people doing the work. No account managers. No handoffs. What IF Web is a Webflow Premium Partner based in Christchurch, building websites and brands for businesses locally and globally. See our work if you want to know what that looks like in practice.

Is What IF Web based in Christchurch?

Yes. What IF Web is based on St Asaph Street in Christchurch and works with businesses locally and internationally. If you're based in Christchurch and want to meet in person, we're happy to do that.
